WI: USA's name not accepted

Why are we even discussing this? Even if those smaller countries raised an issue over it nothing would change and well depending on when they start running off their mouth the US could do do some unpleasant shit with the Monroe doctrine, even with objections the US's name would never change

You sure know how to throw the wet blanket of reality on a lighthearted & fanciful discussion. Of course we'd say, "It's our nation's name and it's not going to change, so deal with it!"

Right I'm sorry just stop with the yankee remarks please it offends my gentlemanly southern sensibilities:D
Anyway I'd suggest the Union of American States :p

The original name was the more sensible United States of North America (at the time they obviously laid claim to the Canadian colonies) but the "North" was lost from constitutional documents some time in the 1780s, probably because it didn't flow very well.

I do recall reading that the name was controversial at the time because "American" in educated circles at the time usually meant "American Indian" or "Native American" or whatever they're called this week.

There were also some attempts to come up with a unique name to help imprint the idea of a break between this new republic and what had gone before: some of the ones I remember were Appalachia, Alleghenia (remember, it was only the eastern seaboard at this point), Columbia, and notably Freedonia - with the people being known as Freedes and the adjective being Freedish. But even people in the 18th century thought this sounded silly.

What idiot country has hostilities or starts a war over name?! That's like declaring war on Germany in 1937 because it had more territrory than just Germany!!

Yes, really. The worst I could imagine is that, as Spanish-American Countries, Brazil and/or Canada get independent, they could object to refer to the USA as "United States of America". I could picture complicated schemes to avoid referring to them in this way in diplomatic treaties and in any official document. But going to war for that??? That's crazy!

Even if somewhow Mexico, a Greater Canada, Brazil or a huge Gran Colombia get independent earlier and become superpowers in an ATL AND object USA's name, they won't go to war for this. Greece is bigger and more powerfull than Macedonia, and yet it's not invading it because it doesn't like its name!
