WI: USA does not fight Japan WW2

I'm actually trying to come up with a scenario without a US on the pacific, only a California and a Oregon. Hawaii would be an independent country. Regardless, this works fine too with a USA that just ignores Japan or, for some reason, supports it. Alternatively, having Japan ignore the US and not spark the war.

I'm wondering how far Japan would get in its conquests. Assuming that Hitler goes down to defeat in 1945 as in OTL.

The Soviets would be tempted to open up a front on Japan... or would they... they might cut some kind of deal. Would Japan march into Australia without a US to distract it? etc.

Thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Please say that the US lost the Pacific coast right before WW2, or you are going to be hounded by cries of "BUTTERFLIES!!!!!"

And Independent California, and a Republic of the Pacific. Have to have the PoD back in the early 19th Century. It could work, if there was no Manifest Destiny. As for how such a war would play out; Japan would be fighting colonial forces of European nations that are already engaged in war in Europe. Japan might get away with grabbing the Phillipines from Spain and Indonesia from the Dutch, but the British would fight back a lot harder.

Actually the original PD is before 1900 (and hence posted in that forum)

You do realize that, especially a fairly major POD like this, you have just radically altered the course of American history, and pretty much guaranteed that there will be no World War two, at least as we know it.

Hmm... if the US does not fight Japan in WWII, then by wars end maybe we'd see the People's Republic of Japan? Korea would not be divided, also, as there would be no Americans to land at Incheon and stop the Soviet advance down the peninsula.

Your title fits you well.

EDIT: that's too harsh. But you should read up on what butterflies are in relation to changes in history. I think its on the wiki.

Um, you have two different wars confused.

Incheon was an action during the Korean war, occuring approximatly five years after Japan surrendered. The Soviet union was not involved in the war (for that matter, even the chinese intervention was still a few months away). The Soviets and Americans divided the penninsula in 1945, at the close of WWII. And if the Americans are not involved, the Soviets may very well never pick a fight with Japan (having more important concerns on their western frontiers). One of the main reasons that the Soviets attacked Japan in 1945 was because the Americans pressured the Soviets to join in the war effort there.

What if instead the US either does not place an embargo on oil and scrap metal, allowing Japan to complete its dominance in the Pacific before/if the US becomes involved in that theatre.

American marines landed at Incheon on September 8, 1945. Officially, it was to accept the surrender of Japanese forces in South Korea. Unofficially, as the Soviets had occupied the northern part of the peninsula after invading Manchuria in August, the Americans were worried the Soviets might press further south than the agreed-upon border and take the whole peninsula.

Yes. And why were the Soviets in Korea in the first place?
