WI: US loses the South in the 1860s, but regains it in the 1890s?

The Confederates, for whatever reason, manages to win the Civil War by 1864, breaking away from the Union. In 1889 another War breaks out between the Union and the Confederates. The Second War ends in 1896 with the Union reabsorbing the Southern States.

What would the aftermath of the first War be like? How would the United States change throughout this interwar period? What about the Confederates? What would the two nations be like in the years leading to the second War? How much would this affect things internationally?

Even with a Union victory, how devastating would a full-scale war on American soil in the 1880s-1890s be? How much impact would this war have on the rest of the World?

After the Second War, how do you think the US will continue? How long will recovery take, especially for the South? How will American culture be affected by this?

If the Confederacy does manage to gain independence it would set a precedent for more states to break away on their own. Both the South and Union would break into several different countries. I don't it would be strong enough or have the credibility to reunite the what the United States once was.

Its far more likely that the South will disintegrate rather than the Union. Having the Union disintegrate is more wish fulfillment to be found in Confed-Wanks. The forces tearing apart the CSA were infinitely stronger than those that might pull on the USA.

That's a lot of questions

That's a LOT of questions, and they all depend on how the First Civil War is ended. Foreign Intervention changes the dynamic. And with the British and French embracing complete democracy and universal male suffrage in 1867 and 1871 respectively, the CSA won't see them anxious to intervene again.

I would suggest you answer your own questions and then ask us what we think of your opinions.

i think this would result in even more annoying southern and possibly texan nationalism than OTL the extent of which would depend on how much the confederacy held post civil war, how they were annexed by the union, and depending on if the confederacy splintered post war. i suspect a way more radical reconstruction if annexed through war and a the south becoming more dominated by african americans and poor whites while many former confederates move west toward the great plains (although i could be wrong about that last part this is my first post). Also I've seen a few people claim the the remaining us would fracture in a confederate victory, why is that? i always though it would centralize the us more then otl and create a loyal minority of runaway slaves.

If it manages to breakaway, there's a high probability that CSA unravels considerably of its own accord -- multiple states falling away, some rejoining the US. Since CSA will be considerably weaker by the cost of the war, the loss of some states, and a fractious government, they'll largely be limited WRT the US and will be sure to do little to provoke. If there is another war between the two, it'll likely be the US seizing disputed territory and CSA unable to prevent.

So, unless CSA breaks away, somehow survives, and is then incredibly stupid (in provoking a stronger neighbor), I can't see a US/CSA war in 1890.

I disagree, revanchism would be strong for a long time in the United States. I can certainly see this happening.
