WI US federal Department of Propeganda

What if the federal government created a Department of Propaganda during World War II? It can have a different name but at least has to have similar functions to the UK Ministry of Information.

The Chomsky thesis that that's essentially what we already have.

For example, that we committed genocide in Guatemala in the 1980s. That we in the United States gave arms and otherwise actively assisted. You have to argue to this conclusion, but it really is kind of true.

And the corporate 'news' media, hardly a whit of it. Such a bunch of goody two shoes, they basically just repeat government announcements.

If we had a 'Ministry of Information,' at least that aspect would be out in the open.

Given how powerful Russian propaganda is in the west right now, and its use in influencing public opinion. I would think this is badly needed and should be looked into.

Re Geography Dude, there is an argument that the dead hand of federal bureaucratic procedures would in fact wind up reducing the amount of propaganda Americans were exposed to if there was a legally chartered department to do it.

That is interesting. That corporations would end up more responsive to those in power than would entrenched bureaucracies. Or, at least that would be the theory.

And then at various unpredictable times the corporate 'news' media digs in their heels and insists on doing some actual journalism. (much like Star Trek and the Prime Directive, they don't selectively violate it, as much as they seem to selectively adhere to it!)
