WI: US Bombs North Korea

In 1994, the issue of North Korea's nuclear program was a hot topic. President Clinton strongly considered an aerial campaign against the Koreans but then they agreed to a treaty brokered with the help of Former President Carter. Of course we know what happened next. So what if the US went with the military option?

Nothing good. Assuming the bombing does not result in immediate and frantic negotiations, Seoul is mostly destroyed in a flurry of artillery strikes and North Korea tries a suicidal push into South Korea. China freaks at the prospect of more American military presence on the peninsula as troops move in to contain and counter the DPRK army. Russian hardliners just got a major boost as "American imperialism" winds up seemingly at the moment the USSR falls. Japan now must decide if they are going to commit to a war or try to turn the other cheek. It might cost Clinton the White House in 1996 and set up for a bigger Republican majority.

It wouldn't take very long for the artillery batteries to be destroyed.

The intervention in Bosnia didn't hurt Clinton.

I'm writing a TL right now that explores the consequences of this PoD. You can find it here. My take is that the Norks do a lot of damage in the opening stages of the war, but subsequently get curbstomped. Unified behind their 'war president' I've got the Democrats taking over Congress and Clinton winning in 1996, albeit at a slightly smaller margin because I've got Perot raking in the anti-war voters.

There are likely a lot more dead Americans here and if we start the fight the US becomes the aggeessor
