WI: Urabi Wins Battle of Tel el-Kebir?

Worse than Isandlwana and Maiwand combined. Worse than Majuba. The finest British Army under its best General just got its backside handed to it. How bad is the defeat?

Evelyn Wood still has the basis for a new army at Alexandria and Indian troops could be drafted in quickly in larger numbers...

Quick initial thoughts.

How does he manage to win?

Wolseley conducted a night approach to the battle field which has its risks. Perhaps he could have fallen into a well laid trap or a surprise attack?

If the Egyptians stay on the defense they would have to be better prepared then OTL. Stronger defences and kill zones to sap the British fighting force. They absorb the British attack then launch flank attack.

Most of the Egyptian soldiers were tired from having stood to all night. Because of the haste with which Urabi's forces had prepared their defences, there were no obstacles in front of them to disrupt the attackers.

Everyone feel free to float any other ideas.;)

What if Urabi Wins Battle of Tel el-Kebir?

What chances does his revolt have going forward? Would it encourage more Egyptians to join his cause?

What would happen to Sudan in this scenario ? Would the Egyptian army be able to deal with the Mahdi Rebellion, if it occur like in OTL ? The Sudanese peoples would still rebell against the Turkish-Circassian- Egyptian foreign rule. The Egyptian army wasn´t able to put it down itself without British intervention...

Yeah, things could get pretty out of hand if the Mahdists team up with Urabi. This wouldn't make a bad timeline.
