WI: United States Ends War With Germany Through Armistice

What if instead of requiring Nazi Germany to accept total surrender following an invasion of mainland Europe, the Americans simply require armistice of after destroying their fleet of Uboat harassing shipping in the Atlantic?

The Germans uses the armistice to rebuild its u-boat fleet back up to strength.

Especially if the allied armed forces liberates only Western Europe but leaves Germany uninvaded...

POD late 1944, As they approach the Rhine River American soldiers suffer increased casualties. FDR's sucessor tires of signing death notices to grieving mothers. He decides to continue supplying the Russian and British Armies, but (quietly) orders American troops to only advance slowly.
Post WW2, the British Army occupies Schleswig-Holstein, Friesland and the Rhur with the Russian Army occupying the rest.
The French Army barely maintains a watch on the Southern Rhine as they struggle to limit French Communists.

Who will be Henry Wallace who was no Nazi sympathizer, to say the least.

Why would the Americans drop their commitment to unconditional surrender?

Why would the Americans drop their commitment to unconditional surrender?

Maybe by 1944 they know they're going to win and they begin to realize that the Soviets have become the bigger threat so they decide a completely unified, Western backed Germany is nessecary against any future conflict with communism.

Kill off Hitler and other Nazi radicals in a coup, then have moderate right wingers in the German military make a deal where they make peace with the Wallies and send their entire army to the Eastern front and let the Wallies occupy their entire country under the conditions that Germany keeps its 1939 borders and that they receive aid against the Russians.

It's a long shot, but it's the closest thing to a plausible scenario with an armistice instead of unconditional surrender unless the Germans somehow can destroy the USSR in 1941 and force a stalemate with the Wallies (probably even more unlikely).

The original post refers specifically to "Nazi Germany." Positing the US abandon unconditional surrender in the event of a successful coup against the Nazis is unrealistic enough. Positing such abandonment with the Nazis still in power is--well, I'm speechless.

Can't remember right now on which conference (Teheran ? or even earlier ?) the Allies commited themself (GB as well as SU as well as USA) to nothing else than unconditional surrender.

To get the USA out of this alliance, making their 'own thing' with Germany ...
1. let the germans have masses of thermobaric bombs and bombers stationed in Spain or north Africa in 1943 to burn and bomd the US-forces or Operation Torch into ashes ('just' for letting the US feel some 'pain')
2. let the germans have some nukes and 'Amerika-bombers' in 1943 to bomb Moscow as well as Leningrad and Magnitogorsk (or whatever the transural industrial centers were called at that time) to dust ('just' as an example, what might happen to New Yorck i.e.)
3. let the/a german leader (preferrably not Hitler, who might have been replaced by ...) offer the US - quietly - not to use these weapons on America, if they might drop out of the european/mediterranian/north african war (who bothers about Japan in Berlin at that time).

You see : it 'just' needs 3 little ASBs to flap :p
