So what if, during the union between England and the Netherlands under William III, the decision was made to merge the East India Companies of both states? They were each other's first and foremost rivals and together they could pretty much monopolize the East India trade, forcing the Danish, Portugese and the French out of the Indian ocean.
How does this affect the further existence of the companies, the VOC being dissolved because of no capital and the EIC being dissolved because of the indian rebellion. The Dutch had a much more "tolerant" trading policy, and the English had much more capital, so would they cancel each other out or not?
Who would receive the colonies after the death of W III? Would they stay with England? The Portugese are English allies, would they consider throwing in their Casa da India with the merged companies?
Is a merged "Greater East India Company" even realistic? How would this affect economic history?
(I'm also playing around with the idea of a economic TL based on this, would you be interested in this or no?)
