WI: Union War Elephants

The King of Siam offered The POTUS elephants to the sent to the US. The message was meant for James Buchanan, but it arrived on Lincoln's desk in '61. Lincoln replied and declined the offer in '62. What if he hadn't and instead chose to accept them and make them war elephants?

Wouldn't really be practical as an actual cavalry unit, but as a pack animal probably pretty good.

But, I still entertain the idea of strapping a Gatling gun on it but that's just for fun, and wouldn't really work unless you deafen the animal first.

Big, juicy targets...

IMHO, they would only be as useful as oxen for mobility, perhaps helping out at fords due to their semi-amphibious nature.

In Summer, of course. They would not be 'Winterised'...

IIRC, when war elephants were used in Asia / Asia Minor, they didn't like flash / bang stuff, and tended to be more dangerous to nearby infantry than to the opposition...
