WI: UK with EFTA agrees a Free Trade agreement with the EEC

Perhaps instead of joining the EEC, Britain as the largest economy within EFTA at that time, negotiates a Free Trade agreement with the EEC for the EFTA bloc. Perhaps they may be extras to agree e.g. ECSC, and CAP, it doesn't entail the quest for 'greater integration'.
Would this have been a better rout to take?

I think the issue is that this idea of an EEC/EFTA FTA was too reminiscent of Plan G, which was the UK's idea of a FTA covering all the OEEC (OECD) members at the time (thereby including both EEC and EFTA members) that was perceived by the Inner 6 (EEC members) as being an attempt of UK sabotage of the EEC...
And the one who ultimately shot down Plan G was de Gaulle, so if he sees it as being Plan G redux, the FTA idea is dead...
And Adenauer would be inclined to agree with him on this...
