WI: UK gets Heligoland back after World War I

An overseas territory very close to Nazi Germany?

That will make the start of WWII very different

It depends if Britain tries to use it as a giant Maunsell fort or not...
my guess would be that Britain would follow the same policy as in the Channel Islands - de-militarise Heligoland and leave the Nazi's to do what they will.

I think it's too small and too close to Germany and too far from the UK to be useful but perhaps people with more military knowledge than me will disagree.

Will Heisenberg still go on holiday there? If he can't get a break from his hay-fever will he be able to complete his work on quantumn theory?

The British didn't do anything with the Channel Islands, as it was thought unlikely that France would ever be an enemy. In 1940 when France fell, there wasn't time to fortify. and the British gave them up without a fight, a mistake IMO.

If the UK gets it in 1918, there's a Naval Base there, along with coastal batteries and Zeppelin sheds.

Once the Nazis com into power, it has obvious strategic value
