WI the event that hit Tunguska, hits St. Petersburg? What happens? Mass destruction, death, czar is dead...

Butterflies cause the loss of the Russian Empire to generate a shockwave that makes all the world volcanoes go boom.

It's what you humans get for killing communism!

When did it hit? The destruction of the Russian Empire would lead to an uber Poland, Sweden, or Germany, or maybe a Kievan Rus-like successor would form.

By 1908 Romanovs are numerous family, possessing dozens of male heirs, and Russia is actually recovering from 1905-1906 disasters. So, Nikki would be mourned and new Emperor would be crowned. I highly doubt that Empire would collapse (it didn't in 1825 and 1881), although disaster would be considered an extremely bad omen.

well WWI would probably still happen, as other powers like Germany or Austria Hungary would probably invade Russia, and then Russia would invoke its military alliance and then all of Europe would go up in war like as in OTL, only with it starting in Russia in stead of Serbia. Russia would probably be weakened by the explosion anyway, so they would do badly as per OTL except that nationalism from being the victim of an aggressor would make the people fight harder methinks. However I think that in the end the autocracy would fall anyways due to it being horribly ass backwards. I was actually thinking this event over recently myself and was looking into a TL involving Russia arising from WWI as a Theocratic fundamentalist state due to the population viewing the disaster as divine retribution on the hedonistic and corrupt Czar and his family.

I don't recall any major western/great power capital city being wiped out in a heart beat due to natural disaster in recent times. All sorts of weird things could flow - religious/social or political.

This POD would totally change the 20th century - if you have a decapitating event in a large sprawling country like Russia, does this shatter the economy/polity etc? How much of the core civil service/governing apparatus was in St Petersburg rather than say Moscow (or other cities?) I don't really know enough about Russia of the time to know if the regime could survive such an event - perhaps it could spur a slow boiling civil war which might result in a series of successor states dominated by the various neighboring Great Powers.

Much of the world at the time was still ignorant to the idea of space debris so many would consider it a punishment from God for whatever reason.

How wide is the range of destruction? Wouldn't this also take out Finland and the Baltics, and almost reach Moscow?
