In the recently released Netflix docu-series "Trump: An American Dream" it's noted that Mike Dunbar, as a committed Reaganite, organized a Draft Trump campaign in 1987 in an attempt to get him to run for President in 1988. As Dunbar put it, "To see the Presidency revert back to an establishment politician like George H.W. Bush would've broken my heart." Ultimately, after committing to attending an event organized by Dunbar, Trump announced he wouldn't be running.

But what if he had run? I think it's somewhat unlikely that he would've won the nomination, but what impact would his presence have on the primary race? What would his platform have looked like back then? Up until 1987, Trump was considered a Democrat; would that kill his chances in and of itself? Could he have won the nomination, and if he did, how would this impact the General Election? Would he have any chance at becoming President back then, or would he flop big time? And finally, how does this impact the Trump brand going forward?

Lee Atwater is going to have a fun time with some of the more questionable aspects of Trump's financials, even before all of his late 1980s house of cards collapsed. In some ways, maybe he'd be better off getting steamrolled in 1988, because maybe it distracts him and keeps Trump Shuttle and the Taj Mahal bank loans from ever happening.
