I know Trump ran as a Reform Party candidate in 2000, but what if Trump ran in 2000 as either a Republican OR a Democrat that year.

Back then, Trump had more liberal views (he was pro-choice and supported universal health care in 2000 iirc, and had feuds with Pat Buchanan to boot :p) so would it be possible for him to win the nomination of either party? Also, how would Trump respond to 9/11 and other events?

Thanks in advance.

I'd bet on the Democratic party, though honestly either one is feasible.

Though I don't think he could win the election.

He would lose to Bush for certain. He's ignorant on most parts of a campaign and running against Karl Rove.

Even if he somehow managed to snag the candidacy of either the Democrats or Republicans (the latter I think Trump would have slightly greater chance of winning), the other's just going to lay into him like no tomorrow (especially if he runs against the Republicans/Bush). In 2000, Trump's no more than a half-baked Perot with even less of a clue and so many skeletons in the closet that Karl Rove would have a field day.

I presume Iraq wouldn't happen as you can literally replace Dubya with anyone else to prevent it.

Also, this is an interesting piece of information from his campaign in the Reform Party:

"Trump focused his campaign on the issues of fair trade, eliminating the national debt, and achieving universal healthcare as outlined in the campaign companion piece The America We Deserve, released in January 2000. He named media proprietor Oprah Winfrey as his ideal running mate and said he would instantly marry his girlfriend, Melania Knauss, to make her First Lady. Critics questioned the seriousness of Trump's campaign and speculated that it was a tactic to strengthen his brand and sell books. Trump defended his candidacy as a serious endeavor and proclaimed that he had a chance to win the election. Though he never expanded the campaign beyond the exploratory phase, Trump made numerous media appearances as a candidate, traveled to campaign events in Florida, California, and Minnesota, and qualified for two presidential primaries. Veteran campaign strategist and longtime Trump aide Roger Stone was hired as director of the exploratory committee."
