WI: Tom Hanks in "Star Trek: First Contact"

Tom Hanks was initially offered the role of Zefram Cochrane in "Star Trek: First Contact", but turned it down as he was committed to "That Thing You Do!". Assuming he had taken the role, it would have added a major name actor and a box office draw to a film that turned out to be one of the most critically and financially successful in the franchise. What if it had happened?

I doubt it would make any diference. The movie was made for Star Trek NG fans, with the borg as the "bag guys". That was the crew puller. And, despite the whole "Zefram Cochrane does warp" spiel, the core of the story was the Enterprise's crew vs the borg. All it was needed for the part of Zefram was a half-decent actor.
