Said in my best Gabby Hayes voice.... "Back when I was a young whippersnapper....." One of the secondary impacts of Tolkien's popularity in the late 60's & early 70's, was the resurrection of older fantasy authors works. Authors such as William Morris, Hope Mirreles, Fletcher Pratt, George MacDonald, James Branch Cabell were brought back into publication, or if still in print, got a direct boost in marketing. Publishers were so desperate to get high fantasy books on the shelf, that those old tales could be printed quickly. Considering their age, would the copyrights have expired, making it easier to go to print?
