WI tobacco remained mostly a Native American religious/cultural custom that never caught on in the rest of the world (well, maybe with the exception of psuedo-"Indian" New Age spirituality movements)?

I considered putting this in ASB but I figured out a plausible POD: the Christian churches could have soundly condemned tobacco use as a "pagan religious ritual". Now, the problem is that Protestantism is under way by the time of Sir Walter Raleigh, so getting a universal Christian prohibition may be hard.

Or maybe it just doesn't catch on with the masses for whatever reason. After all, peyote didn't....

So, other than healthier people and cleaner air, how would the world be different without tobacco as a mass market product? Alternate cash crops in Appalachia?
