WI: TNG Films More Like TOS Films

The difference that stands out to me between the two is that the TOS films were about change, whereas the TNG films were about everyone staying in place. In the TOS films, most everyone had moved on after the end of the series to something different, and they happened to find their way back to one. When they started, Kirk was an admiral at a desk job, Spock had left Starfleet, and McCoy was off in space as a frontier doctor. By Star Trek II, Chekov had left for another ship. The Star Trek III was entirely about this, with the Enterprise itself about to be decommissioned and Scotty as the new engineer of the Excelsior. And by Star Trek VI, Sulu was promoted to captain of the Excelsior. So it really was all about change and everyone moving on, coming back together, and moving on again. It was dynamic.

By comparison, in the TNG films, everyone stayed in the same place. There really was no reason for Picard to not have been promoted beyond captain, but he remained a captain. Riker stayed First Officer well past the point he should have had his own ship. And everyone else for various reasons could have gone on to something else. The only one who bucks this trend and is like the TOS films was Worf, who went off and came back, but that was only because DS9 added him as a character. Therefore, what if the TNG films allowed for people to develop and have lives, but come together for the story? What would that look like and how would it play out?

There are several differences between the TNG films and TOS films. The TOS films were made more than a decade after TOS was canceled, while the TNG films were made just after TNG ended. Also DS9 (and Voyager) was still running. People already know what was happening in the Star Trek Universe. There was no gap that existed with TOS.
Another one is that TNG was longer than TOS. TOS only was 3 seasons lone, while TNG was 7 seasons. There realy was a status quo. People were used to TNG being like TNG was. There weren't any major changes made since the return of Crusher (besides the other Crusher leaving). People were used to everything being as it was. It is a lot harder to change any major things. Like Picard becoming a admiral and losing the Enterprise D. Or Riker becoming a captain of his own ship. It is the same reason why Worf returned in all movies, despite being part of DS9. People expected Worf to be part of the crew, so they included him.

Besides that, after TNG the star trek universe was more real. There was very little universe building with TOS. There basicly was a blank slate for the movie makers. And they used it well. So well, they basicly created the Star Trek universe of TNG. After 6 TOS movies, 7 years of TNG, 3 years of DS9 and 1 year of Voyager, people knew how the star trek universe looked like and felt like. It limits the stories you can tell. Mind you the TNG movies could have been better. Especialy Nemissis was bad, since it could have been so much better with only little changes.
