WI there was one Nazi in NY 1944

Imagine some young Bundist did not get arrested. He is very upset by all that has happened.

He may well not believe that Germany was really losing and put it down to propaganda.

He discovers that FDR is doing a campaign tour.

I saw footage of that event. In part it was shown to illustrate just how much Franklin was putting on an act of a fit man.

Now I suspect it would not have been that hard to get hold of a gun.

So FDR is murdered in October 1944.

I am guessing

1) Truman becomes the top of the ticket

2) Henry Wallace gets to be President until January 1945

3) Eleanor Roosevelt becomes the VP candidate.

4) Democrats win at least as easily as in OTL.

Eleanor Roosevelt was seen as a significant figure in her own right at that time.

Ms Chase Smith became a Senator (and If I recall correctly her late husband had only been a US representative)

Eleanor became a representative to the UN. No one took the UN seriously at the time, especially in the USA. And being a senator is far from being a VP. The US still hasn't had a female VP to this day. That should tell you something.

That polarization was because she was significantly to his left. She was the biggest opponent of dumping Wallace in 1944. On CR, she was far ahead of her time, which didn't help those numbers. ER can best be described as a Stevenson Democrat IMO.

Given that dropping Wallace caused some problems with sections of the Democratic Party nominating Eleanor as VP may well have been a useful concession to that wing of the Party for Truman.

We still don't take the UN seriously. :p

What about the idea of a Truman/Wallace ticket? I'm not sure how plausible that is, but since Wallace was popular, it's possible Truman might ask him to be his VP.

A woman politician? In the 40s? No way that's going to happen, no matter who's widow she is.

I can almost see it happening. These would be highly unusual circumstances and Truman would have very little time to name a VP choice. We're talking about a matter of days, no more than a week. Mrs Roosevelt would get massive amounts of sympathy votes despite her sex. Yes, it was the '40s, but it was wartime and the entire nation would be in plunged into mourning (I predict a huge "Win the war for FDR" campaign). She's not just a political widow; she'd be a widow to a matyr for the America.

Still a woman, still the 40s.
