As we know, Theodore Laskaris was the son in law of Alexios III Angelos who, after giving a good account of himself in the siege of Constantinople by the Latins, fled and established the Empire of Nicaea. He defeated his three primary opponents, the Latins, Turks, and Megas Komnenoi to found the most powerful surviving branch of the ERE.
If that never happens, and he dies during the final stage of the siege, how do you imagine things play out from there? His brother Constantine may well have founded the Nicene Empire, but Constantine never seemed quite as capable as Theodore. Would Nicaea have fallen to the Turks or Latins, or would David Megas Komnenos have united it with the Empire of Trebizond?
