I have a confession to make. I never heard of the XP-81 until I read about it at www.wikipedia.org/xp81 . The XP-81 was a hybrid fighter. It was a propeller
fighter with a turbojet engine. It was built by Consolidated Vultee in 1943 because the government cancelled it after 1947. There were only two prototypes built by Consolidated Vultee. They were ordered to be scrapped but
one of them is at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. Back in 1985, before I'd even heard of the XP-81, I came up with a plane similar to it. Why wasn't the XP-81 built?
Because it wasn't any good.
