KingKulami, First, Nero was actually loved by the lower class and hated by the senate even after his death. This is according to Roman historians such as Tacitus and even accepted by modern historians.

Second, the line was broken when Nero was killed. That's why the Year of the 4 emperors occurred after the death of Nero because there was no clear line of succession.

Third, just Rome the city itself revolting (even if it was possible) would not spread throughout the whole of the empire simply due to its sheer size and power. If this happened then some general would simply claim to be the new emperor and take Rome.

So, your POD is probably asb and not possible.

So you're proposing some pre-industrial proto-commie-wank?

I see what your saying. A Communist Roman Empire! But I have to consider this ASB mainly because the idea's of socialism was not created around then. Better luck in the ASB Forum.:(

This is ASB, were this to happen in Rome an emperor would be declared somewhere else, the rest of the empire would pledge loyalty to him, and within months Rome would be crushed.

But the revolt would not happen, it is far too early for communism.

I would say the very earliest for any non-ASB commiewank would be if Mazdakism somehow becomes the state religion of the Romans. Hard to do, considering that Mazdak himself lived 500 years after Jesus, and two hundred years after Constantine's conversion... maybe the POD could involve Constantine not converting, then a successor embracing Mazdakism...

Because its in Rome. Way back before democracy was even considered as some kind of government. :p Somehow a communist Rome seems more badass. :D

Well, KingKulami clearly proposed a Communist Rome by his words, that was what I wanted to point at out to our dear Cockroach. ;)

What are the preconditions for any kind of united working class? A few general guesses: An articulated philosophy defending their interests, a literate class, common cause between peasants and laborers (and slaves, probably), enough communication to get the message around...
