WI: The US Stands By Tibet (1951)

tibet_map.china.tibet.gif

What if the US threw significant material and financial aid behind Tibetan Freedom Fighters during the Chinese invasion in 1951?

The goal would be to force the PRC out mujahadeen style, and back across the border.

What would happen next? Could it work?

China laughs and still conquers Tibet. If the U.S. Pushes the issue let us be reminded the Sino-Soviet Split hasn't happned yet.

How do they do it without Indian support and even then its hard to cross the 'small hills' in between.

That's true.

One of the reasons why India allied with the USSR was because of American support of Pakistan. The split was only complete with Nixon and Kissinger and their hatred of Indira Gandhi. If the US presses Tibet, perhaps India would ally with the US.

You mean.... the way they are now?

They are not minority now. But, at the time, Tibet had about less than 2 mil. population and China about 500 mil. If during fights and later reprisals from PLA significant part of Tibetan population is killed or forced to flee into India, just how hard do you think it would be for Mao to relocate a million or two Hans into Tibet?

Just a reminder:

Disclaimer notice: I don't support any genocide or killing but I'm just pointing that Tibetans are not in position for serious conflict with China, especially with Mao-led China.

It may help the in Korea. The Chinese will be forced to send more troops to Tibet. However longterm the Tibetans will lose and likely be in a worser state than Otl. The Tibetans will lose the war. The Chinese have the manpower to fight both in Korea and Tibet, however it might have a slightly more postive effect for the Korean peninsula. A ratified peace, or a more northern frontier.
