WI the US does not rebuild Washington after the British burn the city in 1814...

So, would the capital relocate to Philadelphia, New York, Boston....or possibly building a new city somewhere inland?

My thinking would be that a city farther from the coast, as it would be 'safer' from a foreign threat. I also doubt the Anericans would try and build ANOTHER new city for the capital.

Well, not nessicarily. There were discussions prior to the victory at New Orleans to abandon the city. News of the victory bolstered Anerican spirits, and talk of relocating was dropped. If New Orleans is a loss instead of a win, it is plausible that the capital may not have been rebuilt.

True. A loss at New Orleans might change some minds. It might also change British minds about ending the war. Question: how has moving/rebuilding the US capital been handled in other "US loses the Battle of New Orleans" threads?

Um, Ghent was signed BEFORE N.O.

The battle of New Orleans (with Old Hickory - A.K.A. Andy Jackson) was fought Dec. 23, 1814 to Jan 8, 1815.

The Treaty of Ghent was signed 12/24/1814.

Without a Telegraph (or some such) , General Packenham still gets his come-uppance handed to him on the misty morning of January 8th, 1815.. And parenthetically, Old Hickory, still winds up as the 7th President fourteen years later.

I hate it when facts get in the way!

Still had the battle at New Orleans gone another way it might have altered the degree of confidence the new America had and whether to re-build DC.

It would also have had an impact on Andy Jackson's career..(especially if he died)

It appears that you missed the post which I was responding to. Even with the Treaty of Ghent, a US loss at New Orleans will dampen American spirits significantly. It "might" prompt politicians to contemplate moving the federal capital. It most certainly alters the trajectory of Jackson's military and political career. Also, it wouldn't be the first time in human history that a nation restarted a war after signing a treaty to end it.

Moving the capital inland might actually be a good thing.

Cincinnati would be a good site.

Road networks will be improved, extended to it. Canals in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois would be started sooner.

Manifest destiny might actually kick off sooner.

Not rebuilding Washington means the British win!

I still think that the city of Washington would get rebuilt on the Potomic, but instead of being Washington, DC it becomes Washington, MD.

I favor Cincinnati and whatever is in Kentucky to be the new District of Columbia. That would be cool!

What if the phoenix just remained dead?

There is the psychological act 'thumbing your face at the enemy'* which is accomplished by rebuilding Washington. Besides the Government already owns the land. The years to dicker and bicker about where the new capital will go could be many.

* Well, its also a physical act as well.
