WI: The Spanish partition the Philippines into two colonies

Nueva Ecija was created as a military comandancia in 1777 by Governor General Clavería, with the capital, Josean at Baler (now part of Aurora). It was formerly part of the province of Pampanga. From its humble beginning, its land area grew to cover almost the entire island of Luzon. Spanish Records in the Philippines recognizes 2 Spanish countries in the Pacific-- Las Islas Filipinas and Nueva Ecija. Poverty was the only reason why Nueva Ecija was not given recognition as a separate country from the Philippines by the King of Spain in 1840s. From 1777 to 1917, Nueva Ecija's territory was however subdivided to give way to the creation of other provinces. The Province of Tayabas (now Aurora and Quezon) including Polillo Islands, the provinces of Palanan (now Isabela), Cagayan, the province of Nueva Vizcaya, the territory which became part of the Province of Quirino, and the province of Manila north of the province of Tondo in 1867, and the District of Morong (now Rizal) were among those created out of Nueva Ecija.

The province was named after the old city of Écija in Seville, Spain.

What if the Spanish partitioned the Philippines into two Northern Luzon becomes Nueva Ecija while Philippines contains Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, any views about this?

It might make for a more peaceful post Cold War, Communism would still be a problem, but the Islamic Moros would not. However even at this time this went against Spanish thinking. You would have to find a way to see it become benefical for Spain to have this happen.

I think it would be beneficial to the Spanish because Northern Luzon has the Tabacco Monopoly, I think this requires a late 17th century POD to work out.

That might work, but Spain found it easier to control the whole of the Philippines from Manila, you would need a city of equal size in the South to do it. Also a POD were Muslims are not that much of a threat to Spain any more, given Spain's history I don't see it. Dividing the Philippines would be giving the Muslims to much power in the South and, unless the Spanish want to go all Crusader in Southeast Asia, I don't know if that is possible.

I think dividing the Philippines would mean that the Northern Colony would focus on Tabacco while the South would focus on china and the crusade against the Moros, I think the famine which caused dissappearance of certain tribes in the north made the project unfeasible if the current extinct and minority tribes in the north were not decimated by famine it would work..

Might work, I just don't have that much information on Spain and the Philippines to be more helpful.

I think the two colonies would later be two different countries later on..
Most definitely, it actually begs the question what would happen after the Spanish-American war, what happens to them? Does the US combine them? Also is Spain successful against the Moros, if they are you might see the Philippines as they are now, if not it would be more along the lines of Bosina or Kosovo or parts of Africa today.

I think the Novales and later revolts might completely separate the two countries in culture..Us might not acquire them..Palau was split from the PH in OTL..

Far enough, I would have great hope for the Northern one after the Cold war ends, the Southern nation, I don't know. I think it would still be racked with bloodshed to this day.

What value would it be to the Spaniards? If everything north of Manila and west of Vigan is too poor to give a shit about, why split it off from the rest?

Splitting Luzon and the Visayas from one another makes more sense.

There is no rational reason for the Spaniards to divide the Philippines. :p

They have their own nobility and the tobacco monopoly..that is why it is plausible..

One thing the nobility in Luzon that the Spanish allied and made arrangements in OTL are the local borneans..
