WI: The public memory of Lincoln if he was KIA

There have been a few ATLs about what if Lincoln had been killed at different times during the war such as at Fort Stevens during Jubal Early's campaign in July 1864. What I'd like to know I how might the public image of Lincon be different from OTL if he had somehow did during the Civil War to battle related reasons be it a stray shot from Early's men or a completly different situation. If he died during a time that the Confederates where a larger threat than in April 1865 like in OTL how might the army's managment of his funeral procession be different?

He would still be seen as a martyr, perhaps more clearly than now.

Other effect is that Hamlin becomes President, and I think is elected in 1864.

Hamlin would have been more radical.

Though of course there would still be Booth and his friends existing in 1865...

Harry Turtledove wrote a short story about such a POD, called "Must and Shall". Lincoln is killed at Fort Stevens, Hamlin becomes POTUS, Davis, Lee and Johnston are hanged, and a bronze statue of Benjamin Butler is constructed in New Orleans.

How would he be seen even more as a martyr?

I've read that one it was pretty good. I'd like to know what other people think could come out of this situation though. I've been listening to the audio book Bloody Crimes: The Chase for Jefferson Davis and the Death Pageant for Lincoln's Corpse and in it the author discusses how Lincoln was transformed into the saintly figure he is in our pop-culture today after his assassination. From it I've surmised that the main reason Lincoln become such a beloved figure is because he was killed after Lee's surrender and most people of the north saw the war as all but finished at that point. So with Lincoln's death the nation went from an all time high point to an all time low resulting in mass shock. This left the public with a feeling of being cheated and thus put Lincoln on a pedestal. Also since the war was almost over the officials of the military could put a lot more work into Lincoln’s funeral than I assume that could have a year or two before.

So I’d like to know what other people think could have become of Lincoln’s public memory if the time and circumstances of his death where different. If your opinions come from reading Must and Shall please explain.
