The events that led to the bizarre Battle of Castle Itter in May 1945 began when the SS, who had been in control of the castle as a annex of the Dachau concentration camp since 1943, temporarily fled the area, leaving the prisoenrs to fend for themselves and giving them the opportunity to send out their cook, Andreas Krobot, to find help.
