I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what the Roman Republic would look like following a Populares victory in the second Sullan Civil War. Let us say that Lucius Cornelius Sulla is killed in the fighting during the Battle of Orchomenus. It still ends in a victory for the Romans, but Mithradates is left to negotiate with the Populares while without Sulla, the Optimates are left weakened and without a central focus for their attempt at power. I realize that a figure like Metellus Pius or Pompey could maybe martial enough support to oppose the Populares, but I am interested more in what a populare republic would look like than exactly how it is achieved.
The leading figures of the Populare republic would be led by Cinna, with Carbo, Scipio Asiaticus, Gaius Norbanus, Gaius Marius the Younger, Sertorius and later on Caesar likely all playing a significant role to one degree or another.
Particularly Caesar seems to have a bright future ahead of him in this case, as long as he can find a way around the proscriptions preventing the Flamen Dialis from basically doing anything outside of Rome. Though with the wider breakdown of Mos Maiorum that doesn't seem like a completely impossible occurence.
In this new regime Caesar would be married to Cornelia, Cinna's daughter, while Gaius Marius would be his cousin. This leaves him in place to really play a major role among the Marians.
Marcus Licinius Crassus likely doesn't end up too well off in this case, while Pompey probably ends up going along with the Populares.
This leaves Cinna in control of Rome and able to enact a Populares agenda. The situation had by this point become dire, and reforms needed to be passed to return some semblance of order to the Republic. So what would the Populare Republic that results look like? What sorts of reforms would be undertaken in place of Sulla's constitutional reforms? Who would be included and who excluded by the regime? Would the power be vested fully in the Assembly and the Tribunates? What would be done about consecutive consulships - which seem to have been rather more popular with the populares than the optimates - are they kept or legitimized? Is the Cursus Honorum laid out in any way similar to Sulla's? What happens with the various tribunals and their Juries?
I have been trying to wrap my head around a populares republic, but I am having trouble getting a proper picture of what they actually wanted to build. If anyone could help with this that would be fantastic. A mention of good sources on this would also be very welcome.
