WI: The Ottomans despose Hussein bin Ali before the Arab Revolt

What would've happened if the Ottomans became too impatient with Hussein bin Ali's refusing to joining the Ottomans in World War I and decided to simply walk into Mecca and depose the Sharif, sending him into exile in neighbouring Egypt?

Well considering he was the unifying figure for the Arab revolt and the Arabs had no intention of revolt before his plea.....you would have seen a more bloodier mesopotamian front for the British who would have to slog their way up against the Ottomans. Despite the popular cliches, for all the resources it had the Ottomans fought pretty good against the British and Arabs combined so fighting only against the British would have seen even more Ottoman victories before the Ottomans eventually fall.

Would the British have diverted resources to liberate Mecca from the Ottomans? Or would they have focused solely on marching up towards Anatolia?

Probably yeah, the symbolic propaganda of taking Mecca could ensure prolonged loyalty from the British Colonial Muslims who always saw the Turks as Despotic leaders unfit for being Caliph. Which would of course have some ramifications in the decolonization of India and Malaysia.

Taking Mecca would be a terrible idea, unless the British are smart enough to only use muslim soldiers for the task.
Exactly. Using christians would have been......counter productive.
However if Muslims take it the awe of muslims back in Malaysia and India about 'Freeing the holy city from the despotic turks' would have been massive. It would have ensured a good few years of more loyalty from the muslim colonial populace in the empire.

The Middle East will be a little different

As one of the members said, the Arab front will be more bloody, but it will end with a British victory

Hejaz would be part of Najd in 1919, 6 years before OTL, and it might extend to modern Jordan

Iraq will be a kingdom with the Emir of Arabistan Khazal Al-Kaabi

(It is convenient because of the large number of Iraqi Shiites, but being Iranian is a problem for the Iraqis)

The other option is the morning family

(Kuwait’s princes, being Sunnis, enable them to conclude a deal that would allow the Kurds and Shiites to become prime minister with the Sunnis as kings)

And the other option is the family of Al-Saadoun, the princes of the Emirate of Al-Muntafiq

(Being an indigenous Sunni Arab Hashemite dynasty, they have a long history of ruling Iraq)

Especially since their emirate ruled most of southern Iraq, it will spare them the problems of the Hejazi Hashemites, who looked like British puppets and are more acceptable to the Iraqis.

But all of them will still be better than the Hejazi Hashemites

Syria will remain French although it is slightly larger and includes northern Jordan and Amman

But with a greater British effort, I believe that Britain will demand Syria, while compensating France elsewhere

Britain may establish the Kingdom of Syria with one of the Egyptian princes from the family of Muhammad Ali

And a Lebanese kingdom with the Muslim and Maronite Shehab dynasty that ruled Mount Lebanon until the establishment of the Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate

Or give them all of Syria

But this Middle East may be more stable than OTL and completely dominated by Britain

Interesting predictions. But you may want to start your own thread on the subject rather than Necro on two years in the past. Maybe link to this one if you want to reference the original conversation?

I would have liked to do that, but I had a problem that no one would reply to me
