WI: The NPD gets into the Bundestag, 1969

This would seriously mess up Willy Brandt's Ostpolitik, sadly.

One effect could be a continued grand coalition, but I think that the revaluation of the mark, made it quite unlikely. Perhaps an uneasy Brandt minority government, that still tries to reach an agreement with the east, perhaps more slowly. A failure to get a majority leads to an earlier snap election (1971 perhaps) which may go either way, since Brandt does not have the results of the Ostpolitik to show for, or Brandt gets renewed support and a clear enough majority. More likely though, and more sad is a NPD/CDU/CSU coalition, which would put and end to rapprochement with the East. Butterfly effects would be large... I would expect Sweden to drop their subservient attitude to West Germany in 1972 or so and recognize East Germany when they see no opening in West German politics, some other states may follow. Quite possibly though, is that Brandt wins in 1973, and attempts to reach an agreement with the east then.

If NPD mostly steal votes from CDU/CSU, Brandt may still have a small majority together with FDP. If so Ostpolitik goes forward, CDU/CSU band together with NPD to stop it, and lose the following snap election. Quite possibly CDU/CSU:s reputation is damaged by aligning with a nationalist party to bring down Brandt.

It is an interesting POD and if someone skilled in counting seats can make up a seats list, that would be nice. Say, if NPD gets 5.1%.

edit: hmm, maybe I should reignite my interest in Ostpolitik, and give this a try for a timeline, but given my track record it would just succumb under the pressure or research.

I thought this said NDP, and for a second wondered why a Canadian socialist party would run for the Bundestag.

Hehe, would be a nice ASB.

But no, it's a nationalist party bordering and later on going the neo-nazi way.

Why does nobody use the Englisch word for Bundestag, federal diet?

I guess that English and German is close enough, so that it feels natural to use it. Rather than the Latin derived diet.

Anyone has any comments on the WI itself?
