"
By May 1932 it seemed that at least some New Guard members were ready for a coup d’état, as rumours spread of plots to kidnap Lang and to imprison State Cabinet at Berrima. The Old Guard worried that it might have to protect the social order from the New Guard as well as the socialists."
"
Yet there is room to doubt whether the New Guard was capable of mounting a successful coup."

"
In the tense atmosphere of early 1932, rumours were rife that the New Guard was plotting a coup or the kidnapping of Lang."

"
The New Guard also planned to kidnap Lang, and plotted a coup against him during the crisis that brought Lang's premiership to an end."
The New Guard was a far-right paramilitary movement formed during the Great Depression in New South Wales. It intended to oppose communists, socialist trade unions and the Labor Premier of the state at the time, Jack Lang (who was causing significant controversy left and right, and eventually got dismissed anyway).
The New Guard was lead by Eric Campbell, a Lieutenant-Colonel. He was a pretty far-right guy, and became more and more extreme and sympathetic to fascism as time went by (even visiting European fascist leaders during the '30s and forming the overtly fascist Centre Party).
Anyway, during Jack Lang's time as Premier, there were a lot of rumours that the New Guard was going to launch a coup against him. The situation became so serious that Lang was actually forced to give Labor its own paramilitary force, and many New Guard members would violently disrupt socialist demonstrations.
It is not unreasonable to assume that the New Guard could, potentially, have actually kidnapped Jack Lang and launched a coup against him before he was dismissed.
Let's say the coup against Premier Jack Lang happens and succeeds in the immediate, short run. What happens after that? How does Canberra react? What does the New Guard attempt to do after taking power in Sydney? Will this cause more violence to break out in Great Depression New South Wales?
