As far as I know symbolic Sati was far more popular, women pretend to attempt to throw themselves on the fire but they are stopped by various family members.
Yes, and for many widows, even young widows, the rest of their lives, they must wear white robes, continue to shave their heads every day (they already started shaving their heads in mourning) and leave their families and live on alms in a temple as a sanyasin and never marry again.:eek: When you consider THAT as the alternative, it is no wonder that many widows DID throw themselves on their husbands funeral pyre and burn themselves alive.:eek: And widows as sanyasins are common in today's India (can't find a reference, but I have seen news stories about the practice--and efforts to provide job training for widow-sanyasini).
