In the 1970s, Roe v. Wade, the Equal Rights Amendment and gay rights led to the formation of Moral Majority led by Rev. Jerry Falwell, a southern Baptist preacher. His allies included Rev. Pat Robertson (founder of the 700 Club) and Jesse Helms, also Southern Baptists.
It is also interesting to note that the Mormon church also opposes abortion, the women's liberation movement and equal rights for the LBGT community.
Suppose the LDS church or at least prominent Mormons were at the forefront of these culture wars instead of evangelical Protestants. With the Mormon religion being a political liability in the deep south, how would southerners react to Mormons leading the opposition to these liberal causes?
