WI The Hon. Ted Bundy

We've seen explorations of PODs that let to Bundy becoming President of the United States, and one of him becoming a talk show host. But what if Bundy somehow makes it through law school, say, joins the DA's office and eventually becomes a judge somewhere in Washington, maybe eventually becoming a federal judge?

Maybe, somehow, he actually gets nominated for a seat on the Supreme Court on the United States? Say he becomes a Republican-friendly Ninth Circuit judge, which gets Bush's attention, and he takes the role Harriet Miers played? (It's unlikely he actually gets the requisite votes because at the time, basically the Federalist Society had de facto veto power over Supreme Court nominees.)

Imagine if evidence of his crimes comes into play in a failed Bush-era confirmation hearing...

Thoughts?

That would hurt Bush bad in re-election. "Hey, my opponent actually nominated a murderer to the Supreme Court! Thank you, I'll just take the oath of office on my way out of here."

You'd need a more emotionally stable Bundy, and if you have him more emotionally stable than OTL, he's no longer Bundy and his likelihood of being a killer is greatly diminished. He wasn't some cool as a cucumber calculated killer, he was an impulsive thug who happened to be incredibly charismatic.

While I agree that Bundy was definitely not stable enough emotionally to come anywhere close to wearing judicial robes, much less be a candidate for the Supreme Court, I think you're underestimating Bundy's intelligence. His IQ reportedly was 136 (classified as "gifted") and he's considered the model of an organized killer (at least before he "burned out" in Florida) and was notorious for being extremely meticulous in not leaving physical evidence (to the point where his fingerprints were never found on any of his murdered victims).

Don't see it. If we're dealing with OTL Ted. He doesn't have the patience to complete law school, those demons wouldn't let him. And even a cursory examination of where he lives comes up with that curious coincidence of murders of dark haired young women wherever he happens to be living; they'd err on the side of caution and pass on him.

As someone whose TL is cited in the OP, I'm not underestimating his intelligence and am aware of his organisational skills- however even acknowledging his intelligence, my point is that he is a deeply unstable man who would be lucky to even get to those judicial robes.

It's worth noting that him going to Law School was not because he genuinely wanted to make something of himself, but because he wanted to spite his ex. That's it. He can focus and put his mind to something and achieve great things, but the moment he fulfilled his goal of making her want him back, he cut the juncture and women began going missing in the North West. This doesn't indicate any actual commitment or dedication to anything beyond emotional causes, which makes the idea of him being a Judge hard to swallow.

This. A lot of people get Bundy wrong. They think of him as a competent, controlled, charming, put-together serial killer like some of the ones that exist in movies/tv (Red John, etc.). That's wrong. Those people don't exist in real life. Bundy was a mess; he shoplifted everything he owned, couldn't hold down a relationship, and had issues holding down a job.

He simply wasn't functional enough to get as far as these TL's all have him getting. It's one of ah.com's less thought-out tropes, and that's kind of saying something.

Yeah, I was wondering whether Ted Bundy is still a serial killer in TTL. The Democrats' reaction to Bush nominating a serial killer to the Supreme Court would be absolutely hilarious,

Fair enough.

Oh. In that case, we totally agree- Bundy was a complete mess and there's almost no possible way he could get close enough to being a federal judge. Which is probably better for him, since judicial nominees have background checks run on them by the FBI, and they'd be much, much more likely to start connecting the dots than all the various state law enforcement agencies were.

I have to believe Bundy would be careful not to get involved in any situation where he would be investigated. While we somehow seem to have elected a sexual predator President a serial killer is a whole nether universe.
