WI The GOP Keeps Control Of Congress 2006

What if the Democrats had not won the House and Senate in 2006? The PoD for this could be no Foley scandal, as shown in this article here http://www.politico.com/magazine/st...down-the-gop-mark-foley-dennis-hastert-213378. What would be the effects? Would it mean the Dems never get filibuster-proof majorities in the Senate, so Obamacare etc doesn't pass? The closest Senate race in 2006 was Webb v Allen in Virginia, if George Allen won might he run for President in 2008 and be the GOP nominee, or would his racist gaffe still haunt him? Perhaps he could run but act as a spoiler to McCain, making Romney the nominee, giving Obama a bigger landslide so the Obama presidency is like IOTl until 2012, when there's a different GOP candidate? What might be the other effects? What if?

Keep in mind, the Foley Scandal wasn't the only reason the GOP lost that year. Iraq was in a complete state of chaos in 2005 and 2006, and disapproval of the war skyrocketed. On top of that you had Bush's response to Katrina, Plamegate, and Bush's reforms to Social security didn't go so well with the Public. The only way I see the GOP keeping congress in 2006 is if Kerry beats Bush in 2004.

As to what happens with them keeping congress with Bush still in office, not much goes different. The surge still happens and the economy still collapses and the bailouts still happen. The biggest difference is that the minimum wage isn't raised, their might be some other very minimal differences that aren't at the top of my head at the moment.

Yes, but the Senate was pretty close, 51-49 Democrat counting the pro-Democrat independents as Dems in the Senate. the House could still flip but its quite possible the GOP might keep a tiny majority. I think that with less Democrat Senators Obamacare as IOTL couldn't pass, and the stimulus might fail too.

Best case scenario for the GOP is if you could have George Allen not say his racist gaffe, beat Webb and have a split majority (50-50, Sanders, the only independent senator I believe, is still going to caucus with the Democrats), but I don't see the GOP taking a 51+ seat majority, nor do I see them taking back the house due to all the scandal (which there were Democratic scandals to, but the Republican were bigger, on top of Foley, Delay was indicted that year to I believe). Plus, if for some reason the GOP has the White house AND the Congress during the collapse, you might get even bigger Democratic gains in the House and Senate than in OTL.
