WI: The French Monarch is obliged to learn Dutch, French and Occitan

I would think French monarchs would prefer their Kingdom accommodate them (rather than the other way around).

Had it been practical, I'm sure William the Conqueror would have made all of England speak Norman French.

Wasn't there some movement in 1810ish that wanted Willem II of the Netherlands to replace Louis XVIII? He probably would have been Trilingual. A little ASB though ;)

no doubt a movement started by willem II himself, considering how a megalomaniac and incompetent moron he was.

the use of a single language for the administration of France (what nowadays is referred to as standard french) was part of a policy of centralisation to curb the power of the local nobility. Even if all King were polyglots, it would have changed nothing to his relation with the people since to abandon institutional unilinguism would have more then likely partly encouraged local nationalism and by extention, another round of Fronde.

I couldn't agree more. I don't understand why here (I live in the south now, but come from the west) people seem to like him. Well perhaps the nearby football club from Tilbug has something to do with it.

BTW the movement: "rattachisten", I don't know the english word.
