WI: The French Community stays together

The French Community was an association of former French African Colonies, however it fell apart in 1960s and ceased to exist in 1995.

But what if the French Community manage to stay alive, with (French) African countries stay with the Community, and the thing becomes a “French Commonwealth of Nations”?

The Community would have been considerably more than a Commonwealth, it would be a meaningful federal state with a common citizenship.

If you had a surviving French Community, then assuming it would be co-existing with a European Community this would introduce interesting tensions. How will this extra-European France interact with an increasingly integrated western Europe?

A surviving French union would of been a huge temptation for the French? For its survival would of mean hundreds of thousands if not millions French citizens outside of France.

Would France still be enthusiastic Europe integration or be more a sideline player who wants to play both sides.

Canadian federal politicians still make a big deal out of the “Franophone’“ but I suspect it is more of a loose cultural affiliation.
