WI the British Raj stayed in the empire?

I was wondering what if the events that happened to have India, Pakistan, Burma, etc.... never happened & had willingly stayed in the UK?

How would British & world history change with Britian keeping its empire in India?

Thanks for any replies.

If India is kept inside the British Empire, then it either becomes the Indian Empire or India leaves. :) OTL India left.

How? Either Britain keeps India subjugated and disenfranchised, which simply leads to an even more violent Independence process or Britain for some reason enfranchises the Indian populace, in which case the British Empire becomes the Indian Empire (population of the Empire as a whole in 1922 was around 450 million, the population of British India was around 250 million).

The processes leading to Independence aren't so easily derailed either- no matter what happens as their perception of the world expands, a whole lot of people are going to start wondering why their country is being run for the benefit of British factory workers (cheap raw materials to Birmingham, manufactured goods sold back to India at a handsome profit).

You can't really seperate the two, how the former happens will affect the latter

That's the problem- there isn't really a way to do this short of giving Indians the same rights the British populace had (i.e. at least partial male enfranchisement) and doing that would overturn the entire profit making basis of the Raj. There's no way an enfranchised Indian population would tolerate much of went on in the Empire.

Unless you lobotomise the entire Indian intelligentsia they're going to (quite naturally) wish to be independent and lead others in that direction.

Yes, but that assumes you have one giant majority-Hindu state that calls itself "India". The way the Raj was organized, that's far from the only (or even most likely) outcome.

One way to achieve that would be an effective dissolution of the Raj into mostly-independent Princely States (as members of the Commonwealth) and four-or-so separate Commonwealth-Realm Dominions. The Raj may technically live on, but as a joint military force/customs union.
