WI: The Austrian Empire collapses in 1848?

Alarm bells go off relating to the Balance of Power in Eastern Europe, as Austria was pretty much THE continental lynchpin of the Vienna System. Newly empowered Napoleon III now becomes the hegemonic force in Italy, as the Italian Natonalist rebels have already been crushed, likely backing Liberal reforms towards loose federation under Pius, while every effort will be taken to establish a new stable diplomatic understanding that prevents both a power vacuumand massive Russian influence expansion. I fully expect Britain and France to back the Ottomans hard

In TTL, Russia elects not to aid Austria against the Hungarians, leading to a total collapse of the Empire by 1850. What now?
You're understimating the austria...but maybe this could work for the best, separated magyar and focus on italy and croatia instead

What are the borders of independent Hungary? Croatia-Slavonia was loyal to Austria.

Rather than a full collapse of the empire, I think the below is more likely. Hungary-proper becomes independent, Galicia-Lodomeria goes free, but the remainder of Austria holds together.

I think a big question would be, who becomes ruler of Galicia-Lodomeria? Agenor Romuald Gołuchowski?

Could we perhaps see Austria gaining Saxony and putting the Wettins on the throne of Galicia-Lodomeria?

Russia will tolerate a free Polish state ,which Galicia would be, when he'll froze over (Or Moscow thaws, whichever comes first ;) ). No way the Wettins agree to that deal assuming Russia dosent intervene to "protect" Galicia first.

Maybe Galicia is forced to constitutionally proclaim itself to be a multinational state of Poles, Ruthenians, and Vlachs/Romanians? (And perhaps Jews).

Russia (and Prussia) would still be extremely opposed to the state. I think they'd rather intervene and see Austria survive than see even a semi-Polish state develop.

How strong was Turkish control on Serbia? Might they have have tried to grab southern Banat?

I'm not sure. We could just see Galicia-Lodomeria either annexed by Russia or put under Russian "protection".

Turkey did not control Serbia. Serbia was independent at this point de facto.

Irrelevant, given basically all the local elite are Polish and will dominate any government. Besides, an independent state that acknowledges and will act as an incubator for a separate Polish and Ruthanian/Ukrainian identity with expectations of cultural and political representation is the worst outcome for Russia.

No, they stay under Vienna or the Czar annexes the area.

I wonder what happens to Venice/Northern Italy in this scenario. Does the Kingdon of Lombardy-Venetia declare itself independent? Do they latch on to the Kingdom of Sardinia? Does a rump Austria keep them?

In 1848 Lombardy and Veneto pledged allegiance to the King of Sardinia. Either they're conquered by Sardinia or they remain Austrian (or one becomes Sardinian and the other remains Austrian).

The Italian Nationalists and Piedmont had already gotten the smackdown by the time the Hungarian turnaround took place. Austria will be able to defend the area even if they concede to the Magyars, and given it's one of the biggest revenue generators for the Crown you can bet your behind they will.

And more important as they needed Venetia as the home of the Austro-Venetian Navy, with hungary out, they would even look more to keep control on their italian provinces now
