WI - The Americans annex French Indochina in WW1

In a timeline I am working on, the Americans join the central powers, leading to a CP victory. As I was designing the territorial exchanges, I began to notice the Philippines. America had begun to establish itself as a world power, with the Spanish American War giving it territories in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

What might the effects be on history if the Americans had taken French Indochina? How might it affect the Philippines Independence? How would Indochina be affect by American rule?

Theoretically possible but you've need a very different 1900 to 1915 in US politics. There was a huge anti-imperial and isolationist movement in the US following the Spanish American War and a lot of people, including Congressmen, questioning why the US was even in the Philippines at all. If the US gets Vietnam it's probably going to be accompanied by a guarantee of independence after a (not very long) set period.

Asian immigration to the US became even more restricted during the 1920's so I can't see the US being super enthused with adding 15 million Vietnamese to the Republic permanently.

Oh I agree that annexation is unlikely, I was just curious how it might affect politics.

Getting parts of indiochina would be easier than just annexing all of it. They could keep coinchina and leave the rest of Vietnam.

Honestly the less populated it is the easier it is to make it into a territory. Both Cambodia and Laos would be easier to digest and might actually stay as a state.
