In the 1900s, imported Chinese Chestnuts transmitted the chestnut blight to the US and virtually wiped out the American Chestnut population from billions to a couple hundred. What if the Chinese Chestnut hadn't been imported and the blight never introduced to the US? Apparently this blight had a profound impact on Appalachia where Chestnut tree and nut harvesting were a big thing.
