WI The 1996 U.S. 500 was a success?

The 1996 U.S. 500 was race held by CART (Then still known as IndyCar), which was held on Michigan International Speedway and also on the same day as the Indianapolis 500. CART set up this race due to the IRLs controversial "25-8 rule", which guaranteed the top 25 drivers of the IRL a spot in the Indy500. As CART teams didn't want to compete in the Indy Racing League, they set up a race on their own, the U.S. 500. But the race turned out to be a colossal failure. First of all they couldn't get their race on network tv and they were stuck on ESPN2. Second, there was a first lap pileup, which took out several cars. But the race was stopped and restarted, and teams just sent out their drivers in T-Cars. Third, the actual Indy 500 turned out to be a pretty entertaining race, plus it was broadcast on ABC.

But what if, ABC decided to scrap the Indy 500 and showed the "stars and cars" at Michigan instead? And what if, Jimmy Vasser didn't start said pileup and the race went on as normal? And what outcome would we have seen for the open-wheel rivalvry in North America? Would CART have won over the IRL? And what would the future be for the Indy 500? Would the race still be the #1 race in American open-wheel racing, or would it have become the #2 race?
