IOTL, the birth of King James II's son in 1688, whom he had baptized as a Catholic, in addition to his other policies, led to Parliament asking the King's nephew, William III of Orange, to send troops to aid them in their quarrel with the king. William, who wanted and needed England's resources to use against the French, jumped at the chance, and the rest is history.
What might have happened if William and part/all of his fleet had been sunk? In a previous thread, it was thought that Princess Anne and her husband might flee to Denmark if their part in the conspiracy was uncovered. If Parliament decides to try again sooner or later, perhaps we might see a Danish invasion on behalf of Anne and George? Although, given the state of Danish finances after the Scanian War, and Christian V's personal views on monarchy, it seems unlikely to me.
Maybe Sophia of Hanover? If Parliament wishes to avoid a personal union with Hanover, Sophia's second son, Maximilian William was still a Lutheran in 1688, so he might be a potential candidate.
As for the Dutch, they are now without an experienced and driven stadtholder. Louis XIV had the chance to invade the Netherlands when William was away in England, but instead, he invaded Germany as part of the Nine Years War. To be clear, my knowledge of this part of history is limited, so I may not know all the facts.
Finally, I've heard differing opinions on James II of England and how 'extreme' his policies were, especially regarding Catholicism. There's always the chance he could end up assassinated and his son re-baptised in the Anglican faith. There might also be a chance of Catholicism reasserting itself. Protestantism was asserted in England after decades of royal policy and a failed invasion from the European mainland IOTL. Who's to say history couldn't repeat itself?
Any thoughts?
