WI: Teddy Roosevelt lives after 1918, runs for president

What if Theodore Roosevelt lived past the age of 60, and ran for office again after WWI?

Would he be successful? Would he try similar ideas as Wilson did?

EDIT: I meant 1919, sorry about that.

His health had collapsed after his Amazon trip along with Quentin's death, so you'd need to prevent both those things. Which of course is a butterfly genocide. Assuming events happen as per OTL, TR probably gets the GOP nominaton in '20 and runs in 1920, but I doubt he'll run again in '24- he'll be 66.

Somebody saw the Daily Show.:D

I think it'd be interesting, and he could well win the nomination. There's not anybody exciting, really; Harding was nominated mostly because the bosses could control him if I'm correct. Then again, that may hurt Teddy; I think this was an age when people actually wanted boring, and the party bosses may want to keep Teddy out because they couldn't control him.

If Teddy did win, that means no Conservative 1920's, and a continuation of his Progressive legacy.

Could he have won in '20?

If Wilson's presidency goes as per OTL, any Republican will win by a landslide in 1920. With TR keeping the GOP Progressive and preventing the OTL ideology swap that culminated in the nomination of Northern Dems Smith and FDR, that means the Dems remain Bourbon. So the Democratic Party will be the right-wing and the GOP the left-wing party, as was the case before WWI.

Unprecedented, but I'd say he could very well have. Sentiment was against Wilson and against the Democrats. Teddy was a name brand, a political powerhouse, and I think he was the front running name for the 1920 nomination before his death.

EDIT: Ninja'd by 'Beav. ^_^

Why would being 66 prevent him from running for re-election? Other than his adventures in the wild, he did a pretty good job of keeping himself healthy. Sure, at 66 he'd be the third-oldest President up until that time, but unlike the top two he was far healthier and more likely to live into his 70s and maybe beyond. The Roosevelts are usually said to have short lives, and while that may be true for Theodore Sr., Theodore, and Theodore, Jr., half of Teddy's children lived into their 80s (including daughter Alice who was 96), two out of three siblings lived into their 70s, and he had several grandchildren who lived into their 80s or 90s.

No Malaria (and presumably hunting in "safer" areas in North America) + longer political life (less time, although he'd take time, for prolonged expeditions) = a much longer life for Teddy Roosevelt. I could see him running in '24, maybe even '28 if he goes all Franklin and decides he wants to stay President. By '32 I'd think he'd be old enough to retire to whomever (probably found a "better" guy this time), and people would be wanting a new President anyway (god knows what the economy's doing). And the 74-year-old might want to retire from hunting as well and could easily live another 15-to-20 years ("Former President Theodore Roosevelt offers his opinion on the 1952 Presidential Election").

This would likely involve butterflying away Quentin's death. The butterflies of that are, in my opinion, more interesting than just this. What would Quentin have done? Would he have been a general? Would he have had a political career?

Even as President he had health problems: continuously overweight despite strenuous exercise, losing sight in one eye after a round with a sumo wrestler, and the fact that they hadn't (because it was too dangerous with existing tech) removed all the lead in 1912. There was a history of early death in the family: both his parents died prematurely of non-natural causes. Also, the Republicans would not remain in power for 36 years, if for no other reason due to voter fatigue.

Quentin would eventually be pushed into politics along a similar trajectory as Joe and Jack Kennedy- the young dynastic war hero and all that.

Roosevelt would easily win in 1920 had he lived past 1919 (just not have him go to the Amazon), and would have won a second term if he chose to run again. As predicting death is futile, let's just tack another ten or eleven years onto his lifespan, and say that he serves all eight years.

Roosevelt, interestingly enough, was considered the next president by much of the international community at the time of his death. He had become, essentially, a leader of the opposition.

With Teddy back in office he would have punched alot of people in the nuts, and annexed a handful of countries.:D

Why?

When he was President before, The only thing he annexed was the Panama Canal Zone - not even the whole of Panama. Was there any territory he would have particularly wanted in 1921?

No, but Teddy is awesome enough to annex a few countries every time he goes to sleep.:D
