WI: Ted Kennedy - The Only Brother

Joe Kennedy Jr. died in WWII, and JFK came close to death as well. Let's say that JFK dies, and RFK also ends up dying (most likely Overlord goes through for at least a while or something). Basically, the only Kennedy brother that lives is Teddy. How will Ted and Joe Sr. deal with Ted being the heir of the Kennedys?

Highly unlikely, given that Bobby flunked his Navy flight aptitude test in '44 and was enlisted aboard a DD in South America only after the war ended, while studying as a Harvard undergrad.

Using handwavium, Ted does likely not go into politics, and if he does I doubt he becomes POTUS. He just never had that sort of ambition, personality, and most importantly, discipline.

Well then again, ITTL Ted finds himself suddenly the eldest Kennedy before his 13th birthday, so his teenage years, and quite possibly his politics and whole personality, would be very different.

Yeah I know how implausible it is, I was just thinking about a WWII longer TL and realized that this could be a side-effect of that. You came to the same conclusion as I did regarding Ted, but wouldn't Joe Sr. try to push Ted to go into politics? Or would Joe Sr. give Ted up as a lost cause?

Yes, I was thinking that pressure from Joe Sr. would make him more responsible and such.

Possibly, but he never acquired it after he was the only surviving brother IOTL. Even in the 1990s he lapsed back into the old habits. Ted was unique in being the only one who was never disciplined, even as a kid. He was the only one who drank heavily at an early age (Jack and Bobby barely drank- RFK often only a single drink during an entire evening), often stealing liquor from the cabinet to get drunk with Joe Sr.'s chauffeur in the tool shed at Hyannis among other things. Didn't get better any later, as we well know. From True Compass he admits to being a social liberal from a very early age, in the 2010, not 1960 sense. Ted was a political conformist, Jack and especially Bobby were not. Opposite is true in their personal lives.

Joe Sr, contrary to popular myth, did not change anyone's personality. He would never disown someone but he would make it clear that they were still loved, but out of favor. No one wanted to go there. Unless Ted turned himself around really quickly, which I doubt, nothing would change. Bobby, incredibly to those uninitiated in Kennedyology, was considered rather weak and even was feared by his aunt to be effeminate as a preteen. Of course the exact opposite was true, as he proved from the age of 15 and up. Keep in mind everyone's personalities: Ted is a Pisces, Bobby a Scorpio. That explains quite a few things. ;)

So, most likely, the Kennedy name is known only to NFL fans? Perhaps Ted Kennedy stands up there with other football greats such as Gerald Ford. :)

Pretty much. We've all seen that Green Bay Packers pic, haven't we? Bobby also was great at touch, but he had much better things to do as a career. In any case, his style was more that of a NHL enforcer. You can trust a Canadian on that subject.
