WI Team wipeout

It would take some research into league rules for the major sports, MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL. I am sure there are some obscure rules on how to handle the situation involving the total loss of a playoff team.

I meant what would it mean if LBJ died with the Cleveland Cavs during the 2016 nba finals series. The Chicago Cubs 2016 World Series team. Michael Jordan and the Chicago bulls during one of the dynasty run. That sort of thing.

It happened a few times. A more notable example would be the accident where Manchaster United's team got killed in the 50s.

Ideal situation might be to have a Vegas Knights-style draft but limited to teams eliminated from the playoffs. In addition to who the team would pick up after the season, they'd get some experienced players to replace those they lost (as well as a lot of sympathy from the general public). In any league, there's a lot of great players on teams who aren't able to reach the playoffs that season.

Best known case in the US is Marshall. They weren't in contention for anything though, so they simply cancelled the last regular season game.

And if there aren’t, I can’t imagine the league wouldn’t make something up as they went along.

I think the case would be something like this - let’s say that it’s a few years from now and, say, the Cleveland Browns finally have something cooking. So they make the playoffs, win enough to get one game away from the Super Bowl, and their plane goes down on the way to Denver. Everyone aboard dies. Mechanical failure or something; doesn’t matter unless it’s terrorism and that would be an even bigger disaster.

In any case, the NFL would have a few options - first off, the AFC Championship. They can either cancel the game and pass the Broncos through, pass through a team that lost to play the Broncos, put together a Pro Bowl-style team to play the Broncos, or...shit, I don’t know.

As for rebuilding the Browns, a Vegas-style draft would be the only answer. Make the team competitive again right away. Putting together a team that barely qualifies as an NFL team would be a massive disservice to the league, the team and their fans. The new team HAS to be competitive - like playoffs or bust, minimum. They don’t have to win every game 79-0 and destroy even legendary competition in the Super Bowl but they do have to win.

every league has some top secret plan for this. I suppose it depends on exactly when it happens and which league. Would be much easier in baseball which is a team sport made up of individuals who don't have to mesh as much as the other sports.

If an NFL team died on way to NFC/AFC championship game or Superbowl, I don't see how you could recreate a team even if you gave them virtually unlimited access to the rest of the league as they wouldn't have any plays in common. Don't think they would want to cancel the Superbowl but not sure what you could do other than have the team that lost to the team that crashed go forward and that is not an appealing alternative.

A Disaster Draft.

It varies depending on the sport, but the professional leagues all have some sort of plans or proceedures that are put into effect if a large number of players and staff from a team are killed or incapacitated. As far as sports in the US go, the NFL, due to the number of players and staff on an NFL team, actually have disaster and near disaster plans. Near disaster is less then 15 players injured or killed. Disaster is 15 or more.

I I always wondered if that happened to a major league baseball team if the highest level minor league team would take their place

I read the disaster procedures posted above - essentially the NHL procedure is “if you lose 5+ players, refill using the minors and free agency and then we do a Vegas-lite draft.” So if, say, a plane crashes and kills five members of the Edmonton Oilers, they can replenish from league stock once hey do so in-House.

But here’s a tricky situation - let’s say, for example, the Oilers trade Connor McDavid. And the ink is dry on his trade to, I don’t know, Toronto. But it’s contingent on passing a physical in Toronto, and before he gets there, he’s in a car accident and gets killed.

My understanding is that he doesn’t pass the physical and the Oilers are shit out of luck and I hope everyone’s insurance is up to date and covers this.
