WI Surviving Malaccan Sultanate

Is it possible for the Malaccan Sultanate to survive the attacks of the Portuguese conquistadors and what POD is needed for that.

The sultanate itself survived- Mahmud Shah established the Johor-Riau Sultanate which, as the State of Johore is still in existence as a federal component of Malaysia.

What you mean is for Malacca to not fall. Interestingly the initial Portuguese demand was for a trading post to be set up, which the Sultan refused, wanting to retain control over trade (which is fair enough). Also, one reason for the fall of Malacca was dissension within the Sultan's court- you could work with either of these two PODs to either have the siege averted or to have the Portuguese defeated.

Yes, I think having the seige averted and the Portuguese having a trading port would be interesting.
 
Would they be happy with a trading post? The 16th century shows a continuous European policy of seizing ports and coastal areas unless there's a strong central power to contest that.
