WI: Superman Returns Was a Success?

I know that pop-culture timelines are usually supposed to be reserved for the pop-culture thread, but this idea intrigued me. Superman Returns, as opposed to its younger cousin Man of Steel, was a much campier, more nostalgic take on the Last Son of Krypton. It made a decent amount of money, but not enough to justify the intended new film series WBs was hoping for. What if it made perhaps $130 million more, with a grand total of $521 million? What would the future of WBs look like, now that Superman has succeeded in 2006, instead of 2013?

If they really wanted to do to to Supes what Batman vs. Superman did to Bats, it would help if they dug further into the Big Blue Boy Scout's rogues gallery. All Mad Scientist/Criminal Mastermind Lex, all the time gets to be a little boring. Darkseid and even Mongul are perhaps too big for this flick, and even Metallo and Brainiac are pushing it, but that still leaves the likes of Silver Banshee, Parasite, Toyman, Prankster, or even Manchester Black and the Elite (preferably treated more sympathetically and respectfully than they were after their original outing).

Let's say they take a big risk and include Braniac, with perhaps JK Simmons in the role. How does it turn out?

Superman Returns made him into too much of a wimp. He needed to throw a punch and do some cool action stuff. We get it, Bryan Singer. He's Jesus. Got it. The world is a burden and he suffers for our sins. Wonderful. Do something interesting.

I completely agree. The point of this TL is what would have happened if the film was a success, which means we'd be stuck with the wimp by default. I hated the take on the character as much as the next guy, but it really intrigued me to see what would happen if WBs never had the perfect excuse to "edgify" Superman, stuck with the mopey milquetoast Jonas Brother look-a-like instead.
