WI: Sukarno victorious

In the mid-60s Indonesia's left leaning charismatic leader was ousted in an army coup led by American backed general Suharto. This brought an end to the Malaysian Confrontation and an anti-Western regime in Indonesia.

The coup however succeed narrowly, as the military itself was split. What if Sukarno was able to suppress the coup and retain power, and eventually pass power to loyal successor? How would this change history, what impact would it have on the Vietnam War, etc?

Hmm.... tricky.....

One would really wonder how exactly would have Sukarno curtailed the movement when one would be knowledgeable or at least ever for once aware about the details of how the whole things were going on. Indeed no matter how well-planned Suharto and co 's action was, it was still a gambling with uncertainty. However, neither it seem that Sukarno was aware about what was really going on until almost the very end. I have to re-read my books before I'll be going to the details.

As for, if Sukarno really managed to realize what was going on before it was all to late and successfully curtailed the movement, what would be certain that Indonesia's anti-western stance become firmer than ever. And PKI will may become verrrrrry powerful, especially after the demise of 6 highest leaders of the army that time, if there won't be replacement or Nasution (assuming that PoD is after the October 1st morning) failed to do something. I don't think that will result in victory over Malaysia though. However, there will be this potential that US will may going to reevaluate their priority in South East Asia.

So do you think The Confrontation will continue through the Vietnam War? I suppose US will expand its role in that conflict and do more to undermine Sukarno and intervene in his succession. Btw did he die of natural causes?
