At the 1986 Reykjavik Summit, Reagan and Gorbachev tried and failied to finalize an agreement that would have banned all ballistic missiles within 10 years. Reagan came close to taking up Gorbachev's final offer but he refused to compromise on his "Star Wars" program and the agreement collapsed. What if Reagan, the only person in his adminstration who believed that Star Wars could work, allowed himself to face reality and agreed to confine Star Wars to laboratory testing for ten years as Gorbachev had asked, resulting in the agreement being made? Would the Cold War have ended earlier? Would Communist hardliners have attempted a coup as they did in response to the New Union Treaty, resulting in the USSR falling apart in 1986 instead of 1991? Would the US Senate and the world at large have accepted Reagan and Gorbachev's proposal? How would Reagan's historical reputation change from OTL?
